Getting the steps in on Walk to Work Day

Walk to Work day, on Friday 6th September, is a great opportunity for employers and employees to take a different route to work … if they aren’t doing so already.

Now it its 26th year, Walk to Work Day promotes walking as a popular and easy way to combat physical inactivity.

Fact #1 in the Know Your Man Facts Toolkit on Exercise and Men’s Health states that 10 men a day die from physical inactivity. Lack of exercise kills more men each year than prostate cancer, or suicide, or road accidents.

But getting fit doesn’t need to be hard or onerous. As Olympic swimming champion and former world record holder Duncan Armstrong, OAM, says, finding an enjoyable activity is the key to maintaining an exercise habit.

Speaking at a Men’s Health Week lunchtime talk in June, hosted by the Australian Men’s Health Forum, Armstrong said guys should ask themselves every day, “What can I do today to improve my health outcomes?”

“What can I do to focus on my health for 30 minutes? Is it standing up or sitting down five times an hour? Where do I want to invest in myself today? Just have the goal to exercise today.”

The Know Your Man Facts Exercise + Men’s Health Toolkit comes with a full presentation and exercise booklet to download, both at no cost, together with a poster that can be displayed in the workplace and 10 x KYMF graphics that can be shared across social media channels.

Walk to Work Day is an ideal opportunity to make the commute to work – or a section of it – on foot.

While some fitness gurus set a goal of 10,000 steps a day, a study has found that health benefits can be achieved by walking as few as 4000 steps.  Walk to Work Day also supports Diabetes Australia, the national body for the 1.5 million Australians diagnosed with diabetes, and committed to reducing the impact of all types of diabetes.

Walking is an activity that can help people lower their risk of type 2 diabetes.
